We enjoyed our Summer Children’s Sundays. Usually, we send the kiddos to their own age-appropriate classes, but this Sunday, they stayed with the adults. This is not only to give the children’s teachers a break and a chance to be a part of the main church sermon, but it also gives the kids a chance to see how a regular service will run. One day, they’ll be the ones leading the service on Sunday!
Mike started off the sermon portion of the service by reading a book, Max Lucado’s “The Song of the King.” The kids and adults listened intently to the story and Mike’s explanation of the bigger theme behind the book…we have to be able to listen to God’s voice, even among the many voices that try to imitate Him. If you listen closely enough for God’s still, small voice, you can tell the difference.
Then, the church prayed over the children. We truly believe the children are the future of not only the church, but our world.
Finally, Kevin did Sermon in a Bag. Kevin was given this bag with several items, none of which he knew about beforehand, and was to make a sermon out of them. He pulled out several items that a ballerina would wear. He used them to teach the children that sometimes we wear costumes to hide who we really are, but God wants to know the real us.
After the sermon, Matt spoke to the children about being the light of the world. With the room completely dark, he gave them flashlights to show them how they could be the light to the world around them. It’s amazing how these small flashlights could light up the room enough to see.

I love how the teachings on “children’s sunday” are just as much for the rest of us as the children! What a difference one light in the darkness can make!
