What do you long for? And I don’t mean “What do you want?” I mean “WHAT DO YOU LONG FOR?”
What do you desire so much – you must have it…to live?
For the next few weeks we will be discussing that inner yearning that exists for all of us. If each of us go “deep enough” into our hearts there is a common thread of longing we each have.
Unfortunately, we settle for other things because we struggle to believe that inner longing can be met with deep satisfaction.
Jesus offers that to us.
David expresses in Psalm 42 his desire for God by saying in poetry and song:
I want to drink God,
deep draughts of God.
I’m thirsty for God-alive.
I wonder, “Will I ever make it—
arrive and drink in God’s presence?”
I’m on a diet of tears—
tears for breakfast, tears for supper.
All day long
people knock at my door,
Pestering,
“Where is this God of yours?”
Where is this God of ours? I believe He is very close.
Isaiah (35) also speaks to God quenching thirst of a drought by saying in poetry and song:
Tell fearful souls,
“Courage! Take heart!
God is here, right here,
on his way to put things right
And redress all wrongs.
He’s on his way! He’ll save you!”
Springs of water will burst out in the wilderness,
streams flow in the desert.
Hot sands will become a cool oasis,
thirsty ground a splashing fountain.
We could call it the song of the anticipation of the song of the redeemed, because it speaks to what Jesus does for us and how he sets us free.
